MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Madame la Comtesse... - Lot 174 - Aguttes
MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Madame la Comtesse de Ségur, née Rostopchine", Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit, [1865]; title and 299 leaves in-4 (23,2 x 18 cm) written on the front, in one volume in-4, worn half red basane binding with corners (spine partly missing, covers detached). Complete manuscript of this novel. Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit was published by Hachette, in the Bibliothèque rose, in 1865. The novel tells the story of two cousins who leave their Brittany to work in Paris. Jean is kind and hard-working, and attracts sympathy; thanks to his protector M. Abel, and the farmer Kersac, he will return to Brittany, marry and live happily. Jeannot, on the other hand, is unsympathetic, lazy and bad; he will become dishonest and end up in the penal colony. The manuscript is written in brown ink on the front of the well-filled pages, except for a margin on the left (obtained by folding), in which the names of the characters of this novel, which is mostly dialogued, are written. It presents numerous and important erasures and corrections, passages crossed out, as well as additions, intralinear for the shortest, or longer in the margin (some of them filling the whole margin). It was used for printing, as the typographers' notes indicate. It is paginated from 1 to 299 in the upper right corner. Curiously, pages 102-210 have been bound backwards. The novel is divided into 34 chapters (only the first ones have been numbered), most of whose titles seem to have been added during a rereading. Chapter XXVIII was originally titled Le feu en wagon, a title that was crossed out and replaced by Abel, Cain and Seth.
