1964 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA 1600 SPIDER
Delivered new in France Genuine barnfind Interesting restoration project French regfistration title Chassis n° 378140 At the beginning of the 1950s, the Biscione brand entered a new era with the production of the Giuletta, which embodied the relative democratisation of its models. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was an aesthetic and mechanical masterpiece of its kind. First presented in its coupé version in 1954, the Giulietta appeared in a Spider version a year later at the Paris Motor Show. With its elegant Pininfarina bodywork and mythical front end, the Spider also stood out for its numerous mechanical features. Like its brilliant and melodious 1,290 cc twin-cam aluminium engine delivering 65 bhp, then 90 bhp in 1959 in its Veloce version. But also by its independent front axle with superimposed triangles, coil springs, telescopic dampers and anti-roll bar. In 1962 the Spider Giulia 1600 appeared. Aesthetically and technically close to its predecessor, it differed in that its bonnet incorporated an air intake highlighted by a chrome trim, which now housed the engine of the new Giulia Ti. This is a 1,570 cc 4-cylinder engine fed by a Solex 32 PAIA 5-type twin-barrel carburettor. It develops 92 bhp at 6,200 rpm, which makes it more flexible and reliable, and gives it a top speed of 172 km/h. Another new feature was the 5-speed gearbox with Porsche synchros, which made it a rare pleasure to drive at the time. Finally, the drum brakes were replaced by discs as standard from 1964. The interior retained its charm with a sheet metal dashboard painted in the same colour as the body, three round dials, a floor-mounted gear lever and quality leather seats. The Giulia Spider 1600 was produced in 9,250 units and was replaced in 1966 by the Spider Duetto. The model we are presenting was put into circulation on 21 January 1964 in the Cantal department - France. Its current owner took possession of it in the 1970s. The car was stored in his father’s garage where he used to work during the summer months. One summer, a part of the roof came off and fell on the car, damaging it slightly. Embarrassed, the garage owner offered to buy the car back from his client and gave it to his son as a reward for the work he had done during the summer. He used the car for a few years and in 1979 repainted the bodywork to its current navy blue colour. The spider was then dry stored and has not been used for many years. Today, our Giulia presents itself as an interesting basis for restoration. It is equipped with a rare sheet metal hard top and does not have a soft top. It is worth noting that the engine is not blocked. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 is one of the most seductive sports cars of the Italian brand, and this barn-raised example constitutes an interesting project for an enthusiast wishing to relive the dolce vita of the 1960s
