PROVENANCE Private collection, Paris Villeglé has come to be known as the emblematic poster-shredding French artist. His name is inseparable from this technique, which he began using in 1949. One of his best-known works is Rues Desprez et Vercingétorix from 1966. The small work we are presenting, Rue de Rennes, exemplifies his approach, which he continued until the 1980s. It is particularly representative of the French poster artists’ methods. They take the posters as they are without modifying the result and as proof the works are named after their place of production. Les affichiste-lacérateurs français : Jacques Villeglé et Raymond Hains Fellow Bretons Jacques Villeglé (born 1926) and Raymond Hains (1926-2005) met in 1945, became friends and explored the streets of Montparnasse together. They were two leading poster artists, although poster shredders would be a more apt term. In 1949 Villeglé and Hains began tearing off layers of superimposed street posters, using the shreds to create material effects and figurative images. In the 1950s they became acquainted with major French artists. Their work became known as New Realism, the name of a 1961 Paris show that included Arman, François Dufrêne and Yves Klein. This movement is sometimes considered a French version of Pop Art.
