HENRY DASSON (1825-1896)
Large secretary in rosewood veneer, mahogany, green wood, and beautiful ornamentation of carved and gilded bronzes. The central panel is decorated with a finely inlaid medallion decorated with a music trophy in a floral setting. Inside, the flap reveals a writing surface covered in gilded cognac leather with small irons, two lockers and five small drawers decorated with rosettes inlaid in frames. It opens with a drawer in a belt. The secretary's body is flanked by two figures of canephoric caryatids draped in the antique style, finished by winding sheaths. It rests on four dark brass fluted legs and finished with spinning tops. They are joined together by an elegant H-shaped spacer. Rich ornamentation of carved and gilded bronzes decorated with flowery garlands joined together by ribboned knots on the upper band, egg friezes and rows of pearls framed. Bears a Henry DASSON (1825-2896) and dated 1888 stamp. H: 138-L: 85,5-P: 41,5 cm Provenance Private collection, Neuilly-sur-Seine Henry DASSON (1825-1896) was one of the most famous cabinetmakers and bronzers of the second half of the 19th century. Together with other cabinetmakers, he revives the furniture from the reign of Louis XVI that Empress Eugenie loved so much. The elegance of this secretary's base recalls, for example, the famous writing table designed by Adam WEISWEILER (1746-1820) for Marie-Antoinette and delivered in 1784 to the Château de Saint-Cloud by the merchant mercier DAGUERRE, now in the Louvre Museum. As for the central medallion in marquetry, it is directly inspired by the models of a Jean- François OEBEN (1721-1763) or Jean-Henri RIESENER (1734-1806).
