LÊ PHỔ (1907-2001)
Femme au balcon, circa 1935 Ink and color on silk, signed upper left 29,5 x 22,8 cm - 11 5/8 x 9 in. Like the greatest artists of the 20th century, Lê Phổ, the leading artist of the first graduating class of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, offers here his version of a model on a balcony. Created during a pivotal period between the 1931 Universal Exhibition and his final move to France in 1937, Woman on the Balcony is part of his first pictorial period. Using a technique of ink and colors on silk, he relies on a palette with Asian influences. The tones are dark and discreet. The blue of the scarf as well as the red of the incense pot do not stand out and remain sober. Although realized at the beginning of his career, the artist has already mastered his brush and represents the details with great meticulousness. Particular care is given to the áo dài worn by the young woman. The edges of the collar and sleeves as well as the three small buttons on the waist are delicately represented. Through ebony black hair, almondshaped eyes, but also a slender silhouette, Lê Phổ immortalizes a model with a typically Vietnamese canon. Leaning against a balustrade, her chin supported by her crossed hands, she seems pensive, her eyes lost in the distance. The hieratic nature of her figure is opposed to the movement of the scarf. Undulating delicately, it allows the artist to demonstrate his mastery and recalls the technique of the old masters he admired during his trip to Europe in the early 1930s. The Asian-looking balcony emphasizes the mastery of perspective and also creates a distance between the young woman and the viewer. Protected by this row of bamboo, her aura is all the more powerful. As a painter of women, Lê Phổ delivers here his interpretation of a character on the balcony and makes it an ode to the Vietnamese woman.
