TURENNE Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de (1611 - 1675) maréchal de France
L.A.S. "Turenne", at the camp of Binche 18 September [1654], [to Cardinal MAZARIN]; 3 pages in-4, address "Pour Son EMinence "with broken red wax seals. On the campaign in the north of France against the Spaniards, twelve days after the capture of Le Quesnoy. He replies to the cardinal's letter. "As Le Quesnoi was surrendered", he spoke to M. de CASTELNAU "on what one had said that I wanted to suplier VE to make the king agree that Mr. de Beauveau come to command the troops that he thought could stay in this country [...] and told him that if we could winter in the country, I would not ask that anyone but him command the troops and the places that we would have taken, but that since I only had Le Quesnoi, I thought that it would be a place where he would not want to stay. He agreed, and I can assure you that the inside of the I can assure you that the inside of the place is entirely ruined, having wintered there for seven weeks last winter. The surrounding country is very deserted, of which I was very surprised, and one can only consider the inconvenience that this gives to the enemies and the service that can be rendered in the coming year for some considerable purpose. There is not much interest in the governor of Quesnoi, and Mr. de Castelnau did not testify to me that he wanted to be governed there or to consider staying in the country unless a military corps stayed there"... An apostille of the duke of LÉVIS on a fragment of petition and a L.A.S of Mélanie WALDOR are joined.
