GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970)
L.A.S. "C. de Gaulle", Mainz March 7, 1925, to Colonel Émile MAYER; 4 pages in-8. Important letter about his first military writings. He is "deeply touched" by "the appreciation that you have been kind enough to devote to my modest study" [La Discorde chez l'ennemi, 1924]. It is no small honor to receive the approval of a master whose Psychology of Command is literally and rightly authoritative. You will discern what is par excellence "the question" and you will illuminate it with a philosophical light, alas! very rare in the matter. Our army is in great need, my Colonel, of lessons like those you give. May it benefit from them, and not blindly transpose into its new form systems of command which, for a hundred years already, no longer meet the requirements of the times, but which, from now on, would simply be fatal. He points out to him "a short article on the orientation of our war doctrine" that he has just published in the Revue militaire française of March 1 [Doctrine a priori ou doctrine des circostances]: "The tendency that I underline in it is beginning to triumph again in our higher military education. But this time, it must be defeated". He thanks the colonel for having "pointed out the imperfections in La Discord among the Enemy. Your observations will be precious to me if the work is by chance republished"... [This article by De Gaulle reached Marshal Pétain through Colonel Laure, the Marshal's advisor, and Pétain was sufficiently impressed with it to recall de Gaulle from his post in Mainz and offer him an assignment in his own cabinet].
