Interesting letter concerning the siege of Fontarabie, in the part of Navarre annexed by Ferdinand the Catholic and which François' ally and future brother-in-law, Henri II d'Albret, King of Navarre, was trying to retake. The franc archers were paid only one hundred sols per month, "ce neantmoins sachant la grande cherté qui est à Fontarrabye et le bon voulloir quilz ont de moy servir Jay esté et suis content quilz soient doresnavant paiez a raison de six francs par moys Pourveu quilz prometsront de bien et loyaulment serve in the place if the siege comes without any mutiny and that they will wait for their payment as long as they are locked up that cannot be for a long time, because in this case I will help them with all my strength and power by sea as well as by land"... As for the lieutenants, they will have forty francs per month...
