BERTRAND Henri (1773 - 1844) général, Grand-Maréchal du Palais, fidèle compagnon de Napoléon à Elbe et Sainte-Hélène.
10 L.A.S. "Bertrand" or "Bd" (one unsigned), February-December 1842, mostly to his daughter Hortense THAYER; 23 pages in-8, addresses (small cut in one letter). Family correspondence. In February, from Châteauroux, he worries about his grandson's health and that of Mrs. Thayer mother; he goes to visit a beet sugar factory near Issoudun; he gives news of his sons... "I am getting dizzy, I would like to stay in the country, and every day I congratulate myself more and more on the party I have taken, and on not being involved in any way in our public affairs"... On July 17, he deplores the death of the Duke of Orleans: "What a subject of concern for France! It is in such circumstances that it is necessary to regret not to have a government with the English way, where all a country walks with safety, sometimes with a mad King, sometimes with a regent, sometimes with a 19 years old queen, in the most perplexing circumstances, in the middle of a difficult war, having to fight against an enemy, such as Napoleon"... On July 26, he spoke about his next trip to Martinique, where he had decided to take his sons... From Le Hâvre, on September 26, he bids a brief farewell to his son Arthur, and writes at length to Hortense. At the Salines on November 17, he found "the workshop and the buildings of the Salines in good condition, but the canes in a desperate state. The drought is such that we do not know if we will be able to put the canes in the mill and make sugar"... Saint-Pierre December 9: news of Napoleon who has been ill; preparations for departure... Attached is a L.A.S. from Elba on October 15 [1814] to his aunt; and a L.A. from Mme Bertrand to her uncle, Porto Ferrajo May 16, 1814.
