FREUD Sigmund (1856 - 1939)
L.A.S. "Freud," Berlin-Tegel Oct. 1, 1929, to a fellow analyst; 2 pages large in-4 very full of tight handwriting on his letterhead and Viennese address; in German (crease marks, with slight split). Detailed critique of his colleague's study of metapsychology. Freud is at the Tegel sanatorium, where Dr. Schröder was making a new palatal prosthesis for him. He begins by stating that he writes down his thoughts rather than communicating them face to face, because he has difficulty speaking. Freud admits that his correspondent's essay is a logical progression from his earlier book on metapsychological theory, but he is very skeptical about the conclusions. In particular, he criticizes the use of the term "Verführung" (seduction), which is often misused; he would prefer "Vermunterung" (encouragement), which Adlerian analysts call "Aufmunterung"... One can only speak of seduction insofar as one arouses reactions associated with the transference, which, as we know, one does not do intentionally, but which one is forced to do by the fact that such a transference arises spontaneously ("von Verführung kann man etwa nur reden insofern man von der Uebertragung zugehörigen Reaktionen erweckt, was man bekenntlich nicht absichtlich thut, sondern wozu man durch die Tatsache dass sich eine solche Uebertragung spontan herstellt, genötigt wird.).. He points out that if repression is ignored, the problems remain and that such views predate those of his correspondent of eight years ago. He goes on to consider the question of whether his colleague can still consider himself an analyst and suggests that this will not be the case for long, as his views are at odds with the rest of the profession; and the gap will certainly widen with time. He also addresses the question of whether the therapist's first duty is to offer practical help... PROVENANCE Former collection of the singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Sotheby's sale 17 November 2005).
