"Emile Zola", 1867, to Henry and Arsène HOUSSAYE; 15 pages in-8; mounted on tabs at the head of Un mariage d'amour (L'Artiste, august-october 1867); one volume in-4 green half vellum bradel, red title page (period binding, spine and corners rubbed). Beautiful set concerning the pre-original edition of Zola's first great novel, Thérèse Raquin. Complete pre-original edition, in the 3 issues of the magazine L'Artiste, Revue du XIXe siècle, of August 1st, September 1st and October 1st 1867, of the novel Un mariage d'amour, which will be renamed Thérèse Raquin. 8 L.A.S. of Zola have been mounted in the head. They are addressed to Arsène HOUSSAYE, editor of L'Artiste, or to his son Henry, from February 12 to September 25, 1867, and are related to the publication of the novel. February 12, 1867. Zola explains that the requested short story has become a novel in six parts, Un mariage d'amour: "I would like to try to write this work, to write it with my heart and my flesh, to make it a living and poignant thing. [...] In the life of work in which I have thrown myself, I need to be pushed by the necessities of publication to write pages that are lived and freely literary. I may never write A Love Marriage, if I do not find an intelligent man who will agree to accept this novel at face value and to publish its six parts as it is composed. [...] I feel that this will be my great work of youth. I am full of the subject, I live with the characters"... March 4, he sends the first part. 18 April, he gives his new address at Batignolles for the sending of the proofs. 29 April, he deplores the delay in publication, wishing that it would begin on 1 June. May 8, he pleads again for the publication to start. 6 June, sending a brochure (Édouard Manet), and asking for the proofs. 9 June, on MANET: "I saw Édouard Manet yesterday and made known to him the desire that M. Arsène Houssaye would have to publish one of his etchings in the Artist. [He will not give you the etching of Olympia which, between us, is missing. I advised him to give you another etching [...] a reproduction of his painting: Lola de Valence. It is a real masterpiece of suppleness and energy"... September 25: "I have authorized M. Houssaye to delete anything that would frighten him, not only sentences, but whole pages, if he deems it appropriate. One cannot, it seems to me, be more forthcoming. Only I begged him not to add a single line. I have the stubbornness, ridiculous perhaps, not to want to introduce a word of foreign prose into my work. [...] I accept in advance all the cuts, I consent to my novel being castrated in such a way as to remove the virility it may have and which makes it, you say, so dangerous. Only, I repeat it to you, I wish that one preserved intact the sentences which will be judged innocent, and that one does not introduce among them other sentences, unknowns which I refuse in advance, so proud, so noble, so adorned that they are"... Autograph note by Henry HOUSSAYE (February 1877) on the title page, on the history of the publication of the novel : "The present copy contains eight autograph letters from Émile Zola, relating to the publication of the novel and addressed one to my father, six to me and one to Charles Coligny who was at that time secretary of the editorial staff of the Artist"...
