BERNARD Émile (1868 - 1941)
L.A.S. "E. Bernard", to his friend Mme DUCHATEAU; 4 pages oblong small in-4. What a feast for me to learn of the good delivery of your beautiful daughter, and that a boy has finally come, according to your wishes and his, to continue your family". He congratulates the young mother... "God has given you in any case, in the midst of the sad conjunctures we are going through, the joy of seeing your followers, and one day no doubt you will teach the beauty and love of noble things to a child who will understand you and continue". The poet Pierre ROdET announced to him his departure for the East": "Poor friend! here he is thrown in the hazards of this war. His lyre is silent; but perhaps he will find later accents which only smoulder [...] who knows if God does not have designs in leading him there, to see other men, other productions of genius and other horizons of beauty and dream". This departure does not worry him too much, because he will not be more in danger than in France, and "will draw, under new skies, sublime inspirations that our fogs could have compromised by attacking his health". He hopes that he will be sent to Salonika...
