Memories of M. de Champagny, Duke of Cadore. Paris: Paul Renouard, 1846. Two parts in one volume in-8 in continuous pagination, engraved portrait-frontispiece after Madame de Noireterre, "1814; the head finished by Velyn", under captioned serpente, VI-215 pages. Contemporary midnight blue chagrin, ornate spine, framed with quadruple gilt fillet and wide lace on the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide gilt lace inside (binding signed Simier, successor of Petit). The title and the first warning leaf are slightly narrower than the others. Rare first edition; superb copy bound by Simier having belonged to Camille Nompère de Champagny, grandson of the author and third Duke of Cadore. A naval officer who participated in the American War of Independence Jean-Baptiste Nompère de Champagny (1756 - 1834) was one of the first deputies of the nobility to join the Third Estate. Imprisoned under the Terror, he was called to power by Napoleon who appointed him Minister of the Interior following Chaptal, then Minister of Foreign Affairs to replace Talleyrand. On pages 157 - 172, he evokes in particular his steps between the two camps during the first Restoration and the Hundred Days.
