[ARCHITECTURE]. PEYRE, Marie-Joseph Works... - Lot 3 - Aguttes
[ARCHITECTURE]. PEYRE, Marie-Joseph Works of architecture. New edition, increased by a speech on the monumens of the ancients, compared to ours, and on their way of using columns. Paris : at the publisher, year IV-1795. In-folio, 24-(8) pages and 21 plates. Half-basane of the beginning of the 19th century, smooth spine. Second edition, posthumous and increased. It was given by his son, Antoine-Marie, aide-de-camp to Marshal Lafayette and Lafayette and future architect, who added a biographical note in his own hand, and some unpublished texts of his father. The illustration includes 21 plates, some of them double and folding, among which 6 new plates of fountains engraved by Loyer, and an unnumbered plate placed at the head showing the various orders of columns, engraved by Reville. The first edition was published in 1765. "Pupil of Jean-Laurent Legeay and Jacques-François Blondel, Grand Prix d'architecture in 1751, [Peyre aîné] was part of a trend towards geometric volumes and colossal proportions in the first generation of neo-classicism, without the archaeological obsession. In Paris he built the Hôtel Leprêtre de Neubourg (1762, destroyed), marked by Palladio, the Théâtre français [now Odéon] (from 1767 to 1782 in collaboration with Charles de Wailly). His famous collection of OEuvres d'architecture (1765) was to form the book of monumental models for the academic exercises of the next generation." (Jean- Pierre Mouilleseaux) PROVENANCE Hubert aîné, architect (ex-libris). (Spine damaged and detached; some foxing, outer margin of one plate chipped; pencil annotations in the text and on the plates)
