VIGNY Alfred de (1797 - 1863)
L.A.S. "Alfred de Vigny", Friday [December 24, 1831], to Augustin SOULIÉ, at the Arsenal library; 3 pages in-8, address (small rust mark). Beautiful letter at the time of the writing of Stello. He asks his "good Soulié" which is the most beautiful keepsake of the year: "I trust your English taste and on your word I will buy the one you will indicate to me, but the one of figures and not of landscapes". He would also like "to know if there are in the library of the Arsenal or elsewhere, in manuscripts or books, details on the prisons, on the death of André Chénier at the 8 thermidor, on the interior of Robespierre and S[ain]t Just, on the father and the brother of André Chénier. What there is of unpublished, of unknown will be very precious to me. I beg you to give me all the information you can on this subject without making it too obvious that I am asking for it. - It is enough to say to you, my friend, that following the monarchic and constitutional protections, I am going to arrange the Republicans that I do not intend to spare in Stello"... A copy of the first edition of Stello (Paris, Renduel, 1832; in-8, bound in blue half-calf, very worn), with a sending from Soulié to his "dear Francine" (1834); and 4 pages of notes from the librarian (in-12), contestations and corrections for pages 213, 271, 281 and 351.
