PAIR OF ORNAMENTAL VASES in Chinese porcelain... - Lot 209 - Aguttes
PAIR OF ORNAMENTAL VASES in Chinese porcelain with high neck and bulbs, painted decoration on the body of circular cartridges on a pistachio green background. Beautiful chased bronze and gilt mount of Chinese inspiration. Probably England, 19th century. Height : 42 cm (Restorations) The taste for Far Eastern art developed in England under the reign of George, Prince of Wales, Regent between 1811 and 1820, then king under the name of George IV from 1820 to 1830. The Brighton pavilion, an Anglo-Indo-Chinese folly, was the extreme witness to this. His taste reflected that of his mother, Queen Charlotte, who a few years earlier had assembled an important collection of Chinese porcelain at Buckingham House, and already had a "Japan room" in one of her residences with furniture made in England in the Chinese style. George installed on the first floor of his London residence of Carlton House a "Chinese room" whose interior decoration had been realized under the direction of the English architect Henry Holland and by many French craftsmen. A pair of vases with the same mounting was kept in the Henri Samuel collection.
