LARGE CONSOLE in carved and gilded wood,... - Lot 94 - Aguttes
LARGE CONSOLE in carved and gilded wood, it on four feet with double camber. The wide belt is decorated in its center with a large openwork shell from which start garlands of flowers hanging at the top of the foot. The sides are also decorated with openwork shells. The curved feet in double S are decorated in their upper part of a laurel branch ended by a finial. The rest of the foot is punctuated with a decoration of palms. The X-shaped spacer linking the four legs has an eagle in its center holding a bird in its talons. We can think that it is the representation of the preamble of the myth of Leda. 18th century, circa 1730. Height : 87 cm - Width : 186 cm Depth : 54 cm The central subject of the spacer is probably an illustration of the preamble of the myth of Leda. Indeed, when Zeus wants to unite with Leda, he conceives the ruse of asking Aphrodite to change into an eagle and to pretend to chase him, himself metamorphosed into a swan. It is precisely the vision of the swan being attacked by the eagle that pushes Leda to intervene, welcoming the swan into her arms, which then takes the opportunity to unite with her. This console is the perfect illustration of what the artists of the 1720s and 1730s were able to achieve with a diversified ornamental repertoire combined with a thoughtful use of ajours and a clever mix of curves and counter curves that give the furniture a lightness quite characteristic of the achievements of this period. The work of this console is to be compared with the work of the famous sculptor Desgoullons who worked for Versailles.
