A lacquer cabinet with two doors decorated... - Lot 64 - Aguttes
A lacquer cabinet with two doors decorated with lacquer panels with black background decorated with pagodas, boats, mountains and characters; the sides are in European varnish decorated with phoenixes on branches of flowers. The piece of furniture rests on a blackened wood plinth with a golden fillet. The cornice in doucine is arched on the sides. Mid 19th century. Label on the back of the piece of furniture : " Monsieur's room " Height : 220 cm - Width : 121 cm Depth : 50 cm The use of lacquer panels coming from Chinese screens exists since the end of the 17th century. Highly prized in 18th century French cabinetmaking, lacquers were generally bought by the "merciers" merchants who entrusted them to cabinetmakers in order to adapt them to the structure of the furniture, some of them even making them a real specialty. This cabinet is part of the 19th century furniture revival while using the 18th century decoration codes with lacquer panels on the leaves and European varnish panels on the sides as it was traditionally done.
