CARTEL FOR THE TURKISH MARKET in Boulle marquetry,... - Lot 56 - Aguttes
CARTEL FOR THE TURKISH MARKET in Boulle marquetry, the first part is decorated on the pediment with a bronze motif of helmet, sword, quiver, standard. The sides are decorated with bronze falls with flowers. It rests on four feet in the shape of lion claws. Movement of Jean-Baptiste Dutertre in Paris. Height : 56 cm - Width : 32 cm Depth : 16 cm (Accidents and missing parts) It should be noted that the dial of this clock is a Turkish dial. A certain number of clocks made in Paris with movements of Parisian clockmakers have dials with Turkish numerals. Turkey was in the 18th century very fond of French clock-making. It was not uncommon for French ambassadors "to the Sublime Grand Porte" to offer clocks to the Sultan. This was the case for Monsieur de Ferriol, sent on embassy in 1700. When he delivered his credentials to Sultan Mustapha II, he presented him with pistols, mirrors with their gilded wooden frames, a barometer and a sumptuous marquetry clock from the workshop of André-Charles Boulle. This vogue continued during the Louis XV period, the Residence of Munich preserves a clock of Passemant in gilded bronze and Meissen flowers with a dial with Turkish numerals made for the Sultan Mahmud I.
