Amphitrite Bronze with a shaded brown patina. On a base of blackened wood and gilt bronze. 18th century. Height : 53 cm - Height (total) : 60 cm (Small accidents to the base) PROVENANCE - collection Docteur Lambert Jageneau, Brussels - remained in his descent EXHIBITION - Château de Laarne, September-October 1967 : Catalogus van de tentoonstelling gewijd aan Bronzen uit de Renaissance van Donatello tot Frans Duquesnoy, described in V. n°112 as a youthful work by Michel Anguier. Reproduced on page 113 of the catalog. This Amphitrite was one of Michel Anguier's most famous models. In 1654, Nicolas Fouquet, Minister of Finance of Louis XIV, commissioned Anguier to make fourteen life-size stone statues that included this Amphitrite. Several bronze reductions were made from it with some variations. The original life-size Amphitrite is preserved today in the Museum of Fine Arts in Toledo (no. 1973.47).
