GASTON LAFFITTE
ASPEN BROOCH "LIBELLULE Opals, emerald, rose cut diamonds 18k (750) gold About 1900-Master's mark Length : 7 cm - Pb. 20.6 gr An opal, emerald, diamond and gold brooch Gaston Laffitte Gaston Laffitte is one of those discreet figures in the vast history of jewelry. He was a complete artist, "a remarkable draftsman, who also engraved and drew very well" if we use the words of Henri Vever in his famous book "Bijouterie Française au XIXe siècle". Little is known about him, according to the register of the Paris Guarantee, his activity as a jeweler extended from 1896 to 1932. Most of his jewelry creations employ the language and forms of Art Nouveau jewelry such as brooch-pendants with the appearance of butterfly women or poppy belt buckles. Like other artists of this artistic movement, he uses new techniques and materials such as plique-à-jour and opal. Nature is a universal inspiration of Art Nouveau. This theme must be put in parallel with the ambient Japonism of the end of the 19th century. Insects such as dragonflies and butterflies, crustaceans, reptiles, fish, orchids, irises, water lilies, poppies, tulips and many other elements of exotic flora and fauna are recurrent, all curves, calm and voluptuous. The dragonfly is a symbol of renewal that draws its strength from three elements between which it flies easily: air, earth and water. The dragonfly brooch that we present for sale for sale is a beautiful example of Art Nouveau jewelry. Its wings are paved with opals and small diamonds and its eyes are set with two pink opals. Note also the work of amatization of the metal and the mechanism of trembling pin which give this insect a greater realism.
