KUSAMA AFFANDI (1907 - 1990)
Dragonboat, 1980 Oil and mixed media on canvas, signed and dated lower right 95 x 140 cm 37 13/32 x 55 1/8 in. Kusama Affandi  Indonesian painter born in Cirebon, Kusama Affandi is self-taught. Multidisciplinary, he painted in oil, watercolor and learned drawing. The artist developed an expressionist style and illustrated the posters of the films shown in the cinema where he worked. Founder of the union for Indonesian painters, Affandi fights for the independence of the Java archipelago. In the 1950s, he took art classes at the Visva-Bharati University, and developed a unique style. The "pressing of the tube" will mark his work. Indeed, the artist painted by squeezing the tube to get the paint out. In search of a brush that he could not find, Affandi applied the material directly to the canvas. The result pleased the artist, who saw this technique as a way to bring his subjects to life. Freeing his artistic creativity, Affandi separates himself from his brushes to paint with his fingers directly on the canvas, using only his paint tubes. Recognized throughout the world, he participates in numerous exhibitions around the world, and became an art teacher in Columbus, USA.
