CISTE decorated with a gynecological scene.... - Lot 22 - Aguttes
CISTE decorated with a gynecological scene. The basin is engraved on two registers. The main register presents a description of the stages of the toilet, a scene formerly entirely covered with silver (visible remains). The decoration refers to the function of the basin and more precisely for our rare example to the toilet of the women (possibly to the gynecae). The upper register is a succession of palm and canine motifs. The majority of the known cists were found in Penestre in Italy and some other examples in neighboring regions with variations in typology. Hammered and chiseled bronze with remains of silvering, restored handles and bottom. All the elements are original, not antique elements brought back. The old restorations are visible, the engravings are antique. Etruscan art, 5th century B.C. Diameter : 28,8 cm - Height : 13,2 cm Our example was perhaps once also raised by three feet. This is not necessarily the case. PROVENANCE - Collection of Mrs F., acquired at the Rouillac auction house in Vendôme. - Estate of J. Nabon, sold to the diocesan association of Blois. Hôtel des Ventes de Vendôme. - Former collection of Jacques Nabon, acquired in a gallery for the sum of 120,000 francs. BIBLIOGRAPHY - cf. Dictionnaire des Antiquités Grecques et Romaines de Daremberg et Saglio, Hachette, 1873-1874. "Ciste".
