SAINT-SAËNS Camille (1835 - 1921)
autograph musical manuscript, Grand Duo pour 2 pianos d'après les duos pour piano et orgue op. 8 (1857); title and 63 oblong pages in-4. Manuscript of one of Saint-Saëns' earliest works, for two pianos. Saint-Saëns' Opus 8, published in 1858 by Girod, is a collection of Six Duos for harmonium and piano, dedicated to the organist Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély; the piano part is very virtuoso. Of these Six Duos, Saint-Saëns will discard the Cavatina (2) and the Capriccio (4), too obviously intended for the harmonium or the organ, and with a picturesque character perhaps too marked, to realize his Grand Duo for two pianos, of a classical construction resembling the sonata form. The manuscript is written in black ink on 16-line oblong paper, with fragments of the printed score of the Six Duos pasted in. After the title, the manuscript is composed as follows: I. Fantaisie et fugue (22 p.); 2. Choral, marked Agitato (11 p.); 3. Scherzo, Presto (16 p.); 4. Final, marked Allegro (14 p.). DISCOGRAPHY Johannes Matthias Michel (harmonium), Ernst Breidenbach (piano) (Signum 1997).
