POULENC Francis (1899 - 1963)
MUSICAL MANUSCRIT autograph "Francis Poulenc", Pièce brève sur le nom d'Albert Roussel, 1949); 1 title sheet and 13 pages in-fol. in hardcover. Unpublished orchestral score of this piece in homage to Albert Roussel. It was in March 1929 that Francis Poulenc wrote for piano the Pièce brève sur le nom d'Albert Roussel [FP 50] for the Supplément musical (entitled Hommage à Albert Roussel) of the special issue of La Revue Musicale of April 1929 dedicated to the composer Albert ROUSSEL (1869-1937); Maurice Delage, Arthur Honegger, Alexandre Tansman, Jacques Ibert, Conrad Beck, Arthur Hoérée and Darius Milhaud also contributed to this tribute; all these pieces were played during a concert at the Salle Gaveau in the presence of Albert Roussel on April 18, 1929. This Pièce brève was published separately in October 1929 by Alphonse Leduc. In 1949, probably at the request of Arthur Hoérée (whose name appears at the top of the title page), for a concert celebrating the eightieth anniversary of Roussel's birth, Francis Poulenc wrote a version for small orchestra: small flute, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet, kettledrums, harp and strings. This version was not published; it was nevertheless recorded. The manuscript is written in black ink on 24-line paper; it is dated at the end "Noizay 2 Sept. 49". It presents some corrections in blue pen, scratches, and some annotations in red pencil. DISCOGRAPHY Orchestre National de France, Charles Dutoit (Decca 2007).
