[Eduard KREMSER (1838-1914) conducted the Wiener Männergesangverein. To celebrate the choir's fiftieth anniversary, he commissioned this cantata from Bruckner. Helgoland was premiered on October 8, 1893 at the Hofb urg, by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and choir, conducted by Kremser] Bruckner asked when the dress rehearsal would take place: "Wann und wo fi ndet die letzte Probe von Helgoland statt?" He would like to be there, as close as possible. He has heard that the choir has been very well studied, as one would expect from the abilities and genius of its conductors: "Ich habe gehört, daß der Chor sehr gut studiert sei, was bei der Tüchtigkeit u. Genialität desHn. Dirigenten nicht anders zu erwarten war". He wishes the famous society happiness, glory and admiration: "Viel Glück, und höchsten Ruhm und Bewunderung Ihnen und dem höchst berühmten Vereine!"....
