Le Pho (1907-2001)
*Les tulipes roses Oil, ink and colors on silk, signed lower right, titled on reverse 45.5 x 27 cm - 17 15/16 x 10 5/8 in. Symbolizing the Netherlands, the tulip has always created a certain enchantment. The enthusiasm for this flower, particularly in the 17th century, gave rise to the expression “tulipomania”. Before reaching the Western market, this flower was born in the Himalayan region, then crossed the Middle East. Although Lê Phổ did not experience the tulip crisis of 1637 caused by the speculative bubble, he was no less indifferent to its charms. Sensitive to various flowers he would not cease to represent throughout his career, Lê Phổ, captures here the delicacy of tulips. They dominate the composition, imposing themselves as a true subject. The abstraction of the background allows them to stand out and ensures that they are definitely highlighted. A subtle play of colors enlivens this still life. Thus, the red and green of the flowers impose themselves despite the dominance of orange-yellow. Subtle highlights of blue-gray that are found both in the flowers and in the background contrast the whole. A painter of remarkable sensitivity, Lê Phổ manages to capture the transience and beauty of these flowers and thus prolongs the passion they provoke.
