MAI trung THU (1906-1980)
Bijoux, 1964 Ink and color on silk, signed and dated upper right, titled on the back. In its original frame made by the artist 31 x 22.2 cm - 12 1/8 x 8 3/4 in. “She had kept only her sonorous jewels, – Whose rich attire gave her a victorious air – That the slaves of the Mores have their happy days,” writes Baudelaire in one of his poems collected in Les Fleurs du mal. In the work entitled Bijoux, Mai Trung Thứ immortalizes a young girl observing with a satisfied look, a slight smile on her lips, her gold necklace. A black box covered with a carmine interior is placed in front of her containing a gold bangle and earrings. The ao dai, traditional Vietnamese dress, worn by the model suggests, with the richness of the fabric, a certain social status, confirmed by the refinement of the gold ornament. The background, stripped, the decor furnished with a single wooden table in an Asian style, highlight this girl and her jewelry. Created in 1964, the artist has many years of practice and perfectly masters the technique of gouache and inks on silk. He then introduced a new palette composed of bright colors that he mixed skillfully with a more traditional palette. Acid green, candy pink and turquoise blue are combined with ebony black, garnet red and auburn. Moreover, Mai Trung Thứ, plays with his brush and gets subtle color gradients especially on the tunic but also in the background. This play of nuances echoes that found in the Marie- Louise in the frame. A multi-talented artist, Mai Trung Thứ conceives his works as a whole, the frame that he makes himself stands as an art in its own right and ensures the continuity of the composition's aestheticism.
