RAVEL Maurice (1875-1937)
L.A.S. "Maurice Ravel", Saint-Cloud April 19, 1919, to Doctor Edmond BONNIOT; 6 pages in-8 square, envelope. Information on Megève. [Ravel had been convalescing in Megève from the end of December 1918 until the end of March 1919. Dr. Bonniot had married Geneviève MALLARMÉ, the poet's daughter]. "Here is the information requested: Megève is at 1100m, admirably exposed. Its main charm, the snow, must have disappeared since my departure, so that I would not answer for the climate, at this time. It is true that the thaw had already started a few days ago. A lot of nice walks, but you always have to climb, more or less. During my stay, we were not at all isolated. Perhaps now it is more so. There are only two hotels to recommend: the Hotel Conseil and the Hotel du Mont-Blanc. It is the latter that I lived in. From the point of view of food, it is unquestionably superior to the other - healthy, abundant cuisine; milk and eggs in quantity. The rooms there are less exposed than at the Hotel Conseil. If your client can have the room I had at the "Mont-Blanc", it would be perfect. It is very small, but with a balcony in the sun all day. To reach Megève, we go to Sallanches - by Annecy, if nothing is changed -. We leave in the evening, at 20:30, if I remember well. One lunches in Annecy, and one has time to visit the city, even to make the turn of the lake. I could not make anything of that, because landslides had changed the route. We sleep in Sallanches, in the hotel of the Post office. The next morning, we climb to Megève, by car. - Me, I made it by sled. There is a mail, but it leaves at 6 o'clock, which is a little early, and we risk not having a place. It is thus better to be sent a car from the hotel where we will stay. Count approximately 3 hours to arrive up there... ... And if your client thinks he will find palaces, gypsies, horses and luxury poultry, you can warn him that it is macache and noon. Finally, he points out that on May 2, at the Odeon, "Suzanne Thévenet will sing Mallarmé's poems. Will Madame Bonnot be able to come?"... L'intégrale, n° 1094.
