ÉLUARD Paul (1895-1952). BELLMER Hans (1902-1975).
MANUSCRIT autograph "Paul Eluard", Les Jeux de la Poupée, 1939; 15 leaves in-8; with an original DRAWING and 3 original PHOTOGRAPHS in color by Hans BELLMER; all bound in an in-8 volume in jansenist purple chagrin, smooth spine, gilt title throughout, inner binding, speckled paper endpapers and lining, gilt head (G. Gauché; slight rubbing to hinges); black morocco slipcase. Precious manuscript by Éluard of Les Jeux de la Poupée, with a drawing and photographs by Bellmer. Paul Éluard's manuscript corresponds to the first edition of this text, published as an offprint in the journal Messages, cahier II, 1939, illustrated with two photographs by Bellmer, under the title Jeux vagues la Poupée (title here crossed out). The present set is related to a project for an edition planned by Cahiers d'Art in 1939: "Hans Bellmer, Les Jeux de la Poupée, illustrés de textes par Paul Éluard," for which the prospectus and subscription form are included here. The manuscript, in black ink on the front of sheets of pale green laid paper with a handmade paper border, is signed at the end and dated "27 January - 4 February 1939. The title page is written by Éluard: "Hans Bellmer / - / Les Jeux de la Poupée / [Jeux vagues biff é] / (La Poupée - II e série) / illustré / de textes / par / Paul Eluard". The 14 poetic proses are each written on one page; they contain 25 corrections with erasures and alterations, as well as two completely crossed-out paragraphs (VIII and XI, which will be integrated into the 3rd edition of the text in 1949) and variants that have not yet been published. Bellmer's original pencil drawing (10.6 x 11.6 cm) depicts the Doll kneeling on a chair. This is probably one of the two drawings that were to accompany a single copy of the Cahiers d'Art project. Of the 3 PHOTOGRAPHS (11.2 x 11 cm), original photographic prints mounted on card (17 x 13 cm), two are hand-enhanced by Hans Bellmer. These photographs by Bellmer will be included in the 1949 edition. Drawing, photographs, the prospectus and the subscription form are mounted on tabs. Éluard will integrate his poems in 1942, under the title Les Jeux de la Poupée, in the collection Le Livre ouvert II, 1939-1941. A third edition was published in 1949 by Éditions Premières, with 15 photographic plates.
