PICASSO Pablo (1881-1973).
BUFFON. Original etchings for texts by Buffon (Paris, Martin Fabiani, 1942); in-4 (376 x 285 mm), in sheets, in a cardboard cover covered with filled beige curly paper, printed in black; publisher's folder and slipcase (some slight wear to the slipcase). A very nice copy of Picasso's Buffon, decorated with two original drawings for his friend the painter André Marchand. First edition of this famous suite by Picasso, comprising 31 sugar aquatints, etchings and drypoints, in perfect condition. Limited edition of 226 copies, this one of 135 on Vidalon vellum (n° 155). An additional edition of the plate of the "Mère poule" has been added to the volume. Copy offered by Picasso to his friend the painter André MARCHAND (1907-1997), with an autograph dedication and two important heightened drawings, each one full page. The two drawings are in Indian ink, pen and brush, heightened with black ink wash. Opposite each other, they occupy the verso of the 4th sheet and the recto of the 5th (titled "The Horse") and are both dated by the painter "7 August 44"; the left-hand drawing bears in the lower right-hand edge the dedication and signature: "For André Marchand Picasso". The first drawing shows a tomato plant in a pot, probably in reference to some of Marchand's still lifes. The second drawing is in fact a double one, since it presents two figures of the horse: in the upper half of the sheet, a white horse, in its entirety, in profile; in the lower part, a large and powerful horse's head, also in profile. PROVENANCE André Marchand; Jean A. Bonna (bookplate). The certificate of Maya Picasso for the two drawings, dated 10 October 2002, will be given to the buyer.
