MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926).
L.A.S. "Claude Monet", Giverny 13 June 1909, [to Winnaretta SINGER, Princess of POLIGNAC]; 1 1/2 pages in violet ink on paper with her engraved address (3 tiny stains). On his painting The Turkeys, which he would like to buy back. He has just seen again at DURAND-RUEL's "a very old painting of mine (The Turkeys) which belongs to you and which you wish to sell. As my means do not allow me to put the fixed price on it, I take the liberty of asking you, if in favour of the author, you would agree to a reduction. You will please excuse the liberty of my request"... [This is the large painting The Turkeys [W416, Musée d'Orsay], painted in 1877 by Ernest Hoschedé, who was its first owner; it then passed successively to Giuseppe de Nittis, Théodore Duret, then François Depeaux, before being acquired in 1906, at the Depeaux sale, by the Princess of Polignac. The latter replied to Monet on 25 June 1909 that she was only reluctantly parting with his painting "because I had not been able to find a place at home worthy of such a beautiful work"; but she had just "bought a house in London of which the Turkeys will be the most beautiful ornament". She therefore regrets not being able to respond favourably to his request... (Claude Monet Archives sale, 13 December 2006, no. 229)].
