MONET CLAUDE (1840-1926).
L.A.S. "Claude Monet", 18 February 1881, to Marthe HOSCHEDÉ; 1 page in-8. "My dear Marthe I have received your letter and it is a pleasure for me to take on your commission, which I will do as best I can. You can send them tomorrow to the car. Give my love to Michel and the baby [...] I have no time to answer Jean this evening but tell him that I will also do all his errands. [Since the death of his wife Camille in 1879, Claude Monet shared the life of Alice Hoschedé, wife of an industrialist and art collector who had been forced to flee France because of bankruptcy. She married Monet in 1892, after the death of her first husband. Alice Hoschedé had already had six children, the eldest of whom was Marthe: aged 18 at the time of this letter, she acted as an older sister to Monet's sons Jean and Michel, aged 14 and 3. In 1901 she married the American painter Theodore Earl Butler, a pupil of Monet's and a familiar figure in Giverny, widower of the youngest of the Hoschedés, Suzanne, who died in 1899].
