Chronicle of heroic times. Exceptional and unique copy printed especially for the publisher on Japon. Paris, Louis Broder, 1956. In-8. Full morocco. Full garnet morocco, entirely decorated on the boards and the smooth spine with black fillets describing geometrical patterns in crosses, double framing of black fillets; squared boxes of black fillets, names and title in gilt; linings of navy blue morocco, framing of black fillets; light blue silk endpapers; gilt edges on witnesses. Garnet morocco folder with flaps, gilt title, lined slipcase. Covers filled with Montval laid paper, illustrated with an original lithograph by Picasso in red and black on the boards and spine. (Binding lined, Semet & Plumelle, (1960). First edition of this Chronicle written by Max Jacob in 1936 and 1937 and published for the 80th anniversary of his birth. Limited edition of 170 copies on Montval paper signed by Picasso. Exceptional and unique copy printed especially for the publisher on Japon paper and comprising: - The frontispiece and the three drypoints reworked by hand by the artist who coloured them in different colours; - A suite numbered 2/2 of the frontispiece and the three drypoints, signed by the artist; - The suite of the frontispiece and the 24 woodcuts on Montval laid paper (not justified). Copy enriched with an important original drawing, in two colours, signed by Picasso, representing Max Jacob writing. Drawing dated "Cannes, le 14.1.57" and dedicated "pour Louis Broder", executed in red and blue pencils. Cramer, 78 (does not show this numbered suite of 2 lithographs and drypoints, no doubt reserved for the artist and publisher). The meeting with Max Jacob, when he was only twenty years old, was decisive in Picasso's life. He shared his room on Boulevard Voltaire before moving to the Bateau Lavoir, in Montmartre, where Max Jacob followed him. Exceptional.
