CHARDONNE JACQUES (1884-1968)
AUTOGRAPHIC CORRESPONDENCE signed to Ginette GUITARDAUVISTE, 343 L.A.S. December 6, 1950 to March 6, 1968; various sizes, some envelopes preserved. 343 autograph letters, most of them signed on both sides, addressed to his future biographer Ginette Guitard-Auviste. Numerous evocations of Maurice BLANCHOT, Roger NIMIER, André GIDE, Léon BLUM, he mentions his next work on Paul MORAND, his new novel Vivre à Madère. He specifies that he likes Paul VALERY, Valery LARBAUD, Pierre DRIEU LA ROCHELLE, Henry de MONTHERLANT, he does not like FREUD nor Julien GRACQ. He mentions his strategy in the face of favourable (Fraigneau, Vialatte) and unfavourable (Claude Roy) critics. He refers to Paul MORAND in harsh terms and specifies: "I have a weakness for Mendès-France." He develops in several letters his theory of the fall of the West and the reign of money as king. An important part of this correspondence is given to "Propos comme ça" which he describes as a "unique book" without any link with the previous ones and provides the keys to the characters of his novels. Exceptional correspondence, a testimony to Jacques Chardonne's personal life, to his work, as well as to literary life from the 1950s until 1968.
