As a sculptor, he carves rudimentary heads in granite and inscribes the lines within the limits of the block. This block imposes the proportions. It seems that it is by will to observe a law of harmony that Modigliani deviates at that time from the anatomical norm. His sculptures, with their prominent and sharp profiles, sometimes present certain analogies with Negro masks. Their hieratic nature, the geometric spirit that presides over their composition, designates them as works of precious instruction. And yet, whatever role they played in the artist's later development, it is in the painted works that he was able to give us the exact measure of his talent. Before painting, or at least before making his paintings known, Modigliani was a draughtsman. If only I could depart from that old habit that makes me avoid the picturesque narrative, I would say that his drawings were worth the price of a bock, offered by a friend or a neighbor of table. These sketches of which he was so prodigious, deliver us the secret of the art of Modigliani..." Waldemar George, "Modigliani", in L'Amour de l'art, January 1925, n°1, p. 383
