ALEXIS AUGUSTE DELAHOGUE (1867-1950)
Scène de marché à El-Oudiane, Tunisie Oil on canvas Signed lower left Oil on canvas, signed lower left 50 x 65 cm - 19 3/4 x 25 5/8 in. PROVENANCE Private collection, France "This year again, Messrs Alexis and Eugène Delahogue have brought back from their "campaign" in Tunisia a hundred or so canvases which prove a new progress in their so interesting work. The vast expanses where the caravan unfolds on the golden sand, or the setting sun that reddens the walls of the terraced houses, or the poetry of the banks bathed by the wadi, have rather retained Mr. Eugene Delahogue, while his brother [Alexis] was attached to fix the very life of the Bedouins, the games of the children, the work of the women, the picturesque markets, the wild fantasia. We have no doubt that the Delahogue brothers will become one of our best orientalists." René Le Cholleux, "Les frères Delahogue", in La Revue septentrionale, 5 April 1908, n°4, p. 119
