Amédée ROSIER (1831-1914)
View of St. Mark's Square from the Bacino San Marco, Venice Oil on panel Signed lower right Oil on panel, signed lower right 37,5 x 59,5 cm - 14 3/4 x 23 3/8 in. PROVENANCE Private collection, France "By a lucky chance, we have come across several Venetian paintings today: here is another one, and one of the best. This century is good: it seeks the truth, it wants to tell it. Painting had once created a legendary Venice, a pink, iridescent Venice, shining with all the lights of the prism. The moderns, those great sceptics, did not want to believe in this rainbow-coloured city. They have seen, and they tell the true Venice. Accept the perspectives, as authentic, drowned in soft greys, that Mr. Amédée Rosier shows you. He does not lie. He has placed himself on the open sea, in a boat, having on his right the Quai des Esclavons, the Palazzo Ducale, the distant columns of the Piazzetta, on the left the Dogana and the Salute, in the middle the entrance to the Grand Canal. He has seen and said that the palace of the Doges has, even in the steam, a pinkish tint; but his perfect sincerity has not wanted to turn blue a water that is not blue. The picture has finesse, grey limpidity, and almost grandeur. We like it because it is excellent, and also because it proves Fromentin right. We remember that, when the charming painter exhibited his views of Venice, he was reproached for having discoloured the sparkling and chimerical city. Here he is vindicated by M. Rosier, an unexpected and faithful witness." "Le Salon", in Le Temps, June 3, 1877, nº5890, p. 1
