GIDE André (1869-1951)
L.A.S. "André Gide", Cabris January 3, 1941, to Pierre-Jean JOUVE; 1 page and a half in-8 (one envelope enclosed January 26, 1942). He immersed himself in the "precious copy of your verses", lent to a common friend: "My curiosity was all the more lively as I came out of the reading of Hecate very exalted; but...I search in vain for some more correct expression to paint my dismay in front of your verses: they pass me by. I feel only a kind of stupor in reading them, full of consideration for the rest, feeling that I am the one who is deficient here. But I esteem you far too highly to risk compliments about them that are not entirely sincere."
