ELUARD Paul (1895-1952)
Autograph manuscript, [Picasso, drawings, 1952]; 5 pages in-4. Fine text by Éluard on Picasso. First draft manuscript, representing the extremely elaborate draft, with erasures and corrections, of the Picasso text, Drawings, published as a volume by Braun in 1952. Complete in itself, it represents about a third of the introductory text printed at the head of this album of reproductions of the painter's drawings. Éluard has kept most of the text of this manuscript, but comparison with the printed text reveals numerous variants, as well as various unused and unpublished passages. "There are few angry paintings, few paintings as burning as Guernica. Goya had already stood up, invective and cursing against the enemies of the fatherland, who are always the enemies of men. Madrid 1808 has the same rage to defend his honour and his life as Madrid 1936. All the figures in Picasso's studies for Guernica suffer the supreme pain, they do not atone, they receive the insult of undeserved suffering. And they do not accept, they sweat with fury, they spit out the black air of shame and crime, of the humiliating man, destroying his fellow man. With Guernica, Picasso proclaimed on which side of the barricade he has always and forever stood" . Etc. Complete works, Bibl. de la Pléiade, t. Il, p. 449-454
