ROUSSEL Albert (1869-1937)
L.A.S. "Albert Roussel", Arromanches 5 août 09, to Edwin EVANS; 3 pages and a half in-12.
On his work and his travels in Asia.
He thanks Evans for his approaches to Thomas BEECHAM, who seems indeed well disposed towards him: "The score [of his 1st Symphony, Le Poème de la forêt] is at the engraving stage and I expect it to be ready at the end of January 1910; it will be at his disposal [...] if he wishes to play it. As soon as I return to Paris, I will send you and him the four-hand piano reduction that has just been published by Rouart.
Your "Danse" is finished and I am completing a piano transcription, which is very imperfect, by the way. There are 2 minutes of Prelude and 2 min. 30 sec. of dance". He can send her the manuscript, but "a good copy would be better for the conductor". He hopes to hear it on his return from India: "It's a journey I've been dreaming of for a long time, having already visited Ceylon fairly quickly when I was a naval officer". He embarks on September 23rd for Bombay, then goes to Cambodia to see "the ruins of Ang-Kor" and returns to France around January 15th: "I hope that the impressions I will gather from this trip will not be lost from a musical point of view".
He is currently working on a Piano Suite that Blanche Selva will probably play next winter; he will then give it to be engraved.
