Ecole Française du XIXe siècle dans le goût du XVIIIe siècle
The Spring Terracotta Dim.: 140 cm and base H. 8 cm (Restorations) The subject of this patinated plaster, a nymph carrying a jug from which water flows and symbolizing the spring, developed during the 17th century to reach a great success throughout the 19th century. The treatment of the drapery, the ties at the thighs and shoulders, and the work on the hair echo Clodion's female figures. In addition to the seductive aspect of these female figures, rendered in particular by the play of modelling that their "wet drapery" allows, the profusion of this type of subject is part of a particular context, which is that of the creation of numerous fountains in the urban space in the 19th century.
