DYPTIC ASTRONOMIC COMPENDIUM in ivory, rectangular... - Lot 74 - Aguttes
DYPTIC ASTRONOMIC COMPENDIUM in ivory, rectangular in shape, with four hour scales Signed " Jacques Senecal ADieppe Fecit " About 1650. H. 1,8 ; W. 7,5 ; D. 8,2 cm (cracks, wear to the gilding) The cover has an engraved ring, graduated in two times twelve hours (for the measurement of the equatorial hour). In the centre of this ring is engraved the scale of the polar dial. The other side of the lid is engraved with a calendar of the months and days and has a movable scroll in the centre indicating the state of the moon. On the right is engraved the scale indicating the inclination of the equatorial dial. The horizontal case has an engraved circular time table for the vertical wire/axis dial. On the right side a thin metal slat lifts up through the thickness of the table to raise the top shelf and bring the equatorial dial table into "station". In its center is a large opening at the bottom of which is glued a list of latitudes of French cities. On this list comes the finely cut metal dial engraved with foliage indicating the hours from seven in the morning to seven in the evening. This analemmatic dial is moved by a mobile metal disc which is located under the case, for the monthly adjustment. On this disc one finds the signature around a tide dial. A small opening on one side allows to store the gnomon of the equatorial dial. A slight crack in the case comes as always from a problem of dryness of the ivory: causing the disappearance of the needle of the compass and the glass of protection of this one. To complete the history of this type of dial, it should be said that the deviation of the compass, around 1650 in Dieppe was zero, which allowed the use of the analemmatic dial because it is then the needle of the compass which is used as a marker to give the time.
