~Rare rectangular diptych sundial in ivory... - Lot 174 - Aguttes
~Rare rectangular diptych sundial in ivory signed Albrecht Karner The top is engraved with a compass rose, a sun and foliage. It can support a weathervane in the centre. If this is used, a hole makes it possible to observe the compass needle. When open, the vertical tablet has a scale for the polar sundial and a scale for the thread-axis sundial. The horizontal tablet contains a scale for the thread-axis sundial, two scales for the ab-ortu and ab-ocasu hours and a compass, as well as the signature. Above the table is a perpetual calendar with two inscriptions: Epacta Gregoria et Epacta. Juliani Anno. 1659. These inscriptions were typical at this period of the calendar reform (1582). In the centre, a small metal mobile wheel chart adjusts the calendar. One side of the case contains a recess to store the weather vane. Foliage decoration. Germany, dated 1659 Size: 3.54 x 1.96 in.
