BORIS ISRAÉLÉVITCH ANISFELD (BIELSTY 1878 - NEW-LONDON CT 1973)
The Holy Family with a totem pole Oil on canvas Signed "Boris Anisfeld" lower right 60 x 50 cm A certificate from Olga Sugrobova-Roth dated 4 July 2016 will be given to the purchaser. Provenance Private collection, Germany. Acquired at the Van Ham sale in Cologne on 3 June 2015, lot. 3 Private collection, Paris Bibliography The work is reproduced in the artist's online catalogue raisonné under the reference A 2-P. This work, created around 1950, reveals all the complexity of a universal artist who draws on the sources of the sacred. The Christian theme, which inspired Anisfeld throughout his life, is strangely interwoven here with the horned totem pole whose enigmatic gaze questions the viewer. The profound humanity of the Holy Family, the true Trinity of tenderness, protecting the divine child, the Puer Aeternus, contrasts with this mask with its wild expression. It marries the colour of raw nature, a green of the clod, which emerges in the midst of the red-orange hues of maternal affection. With an art of visual synthesis reminiscent of Gauguin Anisfeld offers us this mysticism of colour in which the subtle harmony of opposites, the coincidentia oppositorum of the philosophers, shines through.
