Indignation when learning of the attack of which Las Cases was almost a victim: "What a scoundrel! - The public voice must shout a certain name out loud. And indeed, such a crime could only have been born of an atrocious and cowardly soul; but there is a man who was atrocious at St. Helena and cowardly in England ! Finally, by what strange combination of circumstances this same man is, it is said, so close to the dagger which was to serve so well his hideous thirst for vengeance"... [September 30, 1837?]. Announcement that the King has appointed him officer of the Legion of Honor: "Here is a sign of honor well placed, and which I am very happy to have contributed to placing on your chest"... Other letters to advise him of his authorization for "the relocation of the Auteuil ballroom", and to ask for an appointment with the deputy, to congratulate him on his victory, to cause ministerial defeat...
