BOLIVAR Simon (1783-1830)
L.S. "Bolivar", Guayaquil, August 3, 1829, to Count Emmanuel de LAS CASES; 2 and a half pages in-4 (frayed edges and slits in the fold), envelope with red wax seal; in Spanish. Thanks for sending the Memorial of St. Helena, expressing his admiration for Napoleon. He has just received the immortal work that will live through the centuries, bearing the combined names of the great man and the writer and faithful friend ("la obra immortal que pasará por entre los siglos llevando juntos los nombres del grand hombre y del escritor - amigo fidel"). The letter that accompanied St. Helena's talks is a glorious document that he will keep as long as he lives in the depths of his gratitude. To get closer to the great Napoleon, even in idea, is an effect of the French courtesy that crosses the seas to bring his graces to their mountains ("Acercarme el gran Napoleon, aunque en idea, es un efecto de la cortesiana francesa, que pasa los mares para traer sus gracias á nuestras montañas") . Then, alluding to the pseudonym Las Cases (A. Lesage, under which he had published the historical, genealogical, chronological and geographical Atlas), he adds that he had already read the works of the Wise Man, whom he had admired for his merit ("Yo habia leido ántes de ahora la obras del Sábio; y su mérito me le habia decho admirar"); now he loves him with the greatest respect... A contemporary, skillful translation of Las Cases is attached on the back.
