VERLAINE PAUL (1844-1896)
L.A.S. "Paul Verlaine", Paris 3 January 1888, to his friend Edmond LEPELLETIER; 4 pages petit in-8 in red ink (mourning). "Always in hospital, where I am only getting better, "as for the leg", only imperceptibly as the devil. However, my general health is good - and, outside, a number of benevolent articles seem to augur well for my future publications - my worksites are full - some financial support from the editors and, if possible, in the meantime, from the editorial staff. I am still counting on your benevolent efforts on my behalf for the "collocation" of my eventual honourable asylum and small disguised households, if misfortune should pursue me to this point in this year which is now beginning". He fears that a new doctor will have him "dislodged sooner than I would like for my financial convenience". He won't have money until April-May. "Vanier will only have between 200 and 250 francs in my favour by then. A few articles here and there, news or verses, will be able to increase this modest sum a little, and with courage ! But by any chance, or rather against any chance, I will try to stay here as much as possible". He wrote about this to Dr. Jullien. "In a word, I will make every effort to prolong my stay, which will be salutary from all points of view, for I am working in peace at least, in this very calm Broussais". He announces that his volume Amour will soon be published: "The play dedicated to you appeared in La Vogue in 1886. It is entitled: Written in 1875. It relates to my "villégiature" of Mons, in 1873-74-75. I would have sent you a copy, but my manuscript is at Vanier's, and you know what a poor memory the verses of mine and others are! I hope you'll like it. It's like Nocturne Parisien et Grognard, to you already dedicated in the Saturnian Poems and Jadis et Naguère". He ends by recommending an employee to the hospital bursar's office, Mr. Vally, who has been dismissed...
