[HUGO Victor], DROUET Juliette (1806-1883)
L.A.S. "Juliette", March 16 [1850] Saturday noon 3/4, to Victor HUGO; 4 pages in-8. Beautiful love letter. "I am very sad, my love, for I will not have made your herbal tea today and I will not be able to take you to the Assembly meeting. Alas! I will see you for only a few minutes when you go to the House, for tonight you will attend the first performance of Notre-Dame de Paris" [adapted by Paul Foucher, Ambigu-Comique, March 16, 1850]. The next day, she had to go to a festive dinner with her Montferrier friends. "Thus, my Victor, I foresee that I shall see you for a total of five minutes in two days. That is very little, for a hungry heart like mine, and I do not know how I will be able to resign myself to this small portion that the circumstances have given me. For a little I would cry with tears, so much so that I am annoyed and sad of this life: each one on his own. You see, my little man, I will never get used to not making you the only preoccupation of my life and the only object of my actions. It is not my fault, but it is so. The more I go, the more I need you. I have come to the point of wanting to be even more hideous and suffering [she then suffers from scabies] tomorrow than I am today so that I can stay at home, without rudeness, waiting for you and wanting you in my corner all alone. I hope I shall succeed, for up to now my scabies have only grown and become ugly: it is infamous, it is horrible, it is dreadful! what Happiness! what Happiness! what Happiness! what Happiness! what Happiness!" Provenance Former Alfred Dupont collection (III, December 3-4, 1958, n° 81).
