BRETON André (1896-1966)
L.A.S. "André Breton", Paris October 26, 1962, to Madeleine CHAPSAL; 1 page in-4, envelope. "Two months ago I told you how much I praised yourself for the way you treated me and how much I appreciated the offer of your friendship. I was also told by you that the editorial staff of L'Express had made much of the remarks we had exchanged, and I was delighted, hoping that in the future I would be spared a rather unjustifiable malevolence on the part of a newspaper with which I could believe myself to be sympathetic to ideas and which seemed to me to be the result of a misunderstanding. Let me be the judge of that.... No matter how seasoned I may be to this sort of venom, do you think one can do more infamous than this Mr. Cournot of the "yellow laugh", accumulate more prejudicial lies and vileness? In the press it seems to me that, on the means of harm, one is more scrupulous almost everywhere else. With the very particular care that I had taken to satisfy the desire of L'Express, I would be curious to know how Mr. Editor-in-Chief of this organ can make the editor respond with defamation" . Enclosed are 4 press photographs of Breton being interviewed in his office by Madeleine Chapsal.
